How did you start writing about music?

Writing about music started as an accident as it wasn’t something that I set out to do until I started to do it. As a teenager,  my now wife was writing articles for a local newspaper’s teenager section, so I decided to start writing as well as an additional way to spend time together. Writing on various topics at the beginning, but once I started writing about music, I felt more of a passion start to unfold for telling the story of an album or artist, or concert. I continued to write for the next 5-7 years before taking a break to support myself and family, but the thought of being involved somehow in writing never disappeared. So after about 15 years, I am back.

What is your background in music?

I actually have no background in music, except for listening to music. I don’t play any instruments, and most times it’s an accomplishment if I can just clap along to the correct beat. My knowledge only extends as far out as the music I listen to. Through my writing, I know this will also expand my knowledge of the industry and knowledge of those who have inspired the current artists I am writing about.

Did you go to school for journalism?

Not technically, although I did receive an Associate’s Degree in communications. That was a very broad focus of courses that included journalism, public relations, media, marketing, and other similar topics. However when I went back to school later in life, my focus had shifted to my current career and I earned my 4-year degree in Business Management.

How do you pick what topics to write about?

This is going to be my own personal preference. This blog site is my own and I call the shots. Initially my articles will focus on artists that I have already been a fan of, so you’ll get a taste for the variety of genres I enjoy. Most of the articles will focus on providing an overview of the artist before having a tour date scheduled in the Philadelphia/ South Jersey market.

But I will also focus on some larger newsworthy items that interest me as well.

Will you be in attendance for all shows you cover?

I would love to, but at this time that would be a negative. I’m just getting back into writing, which means the time available will not allow me to attend most shows I write about. I still have a full-time job to focus on for paying the bills, as well as being a full-time husband and father, which I love doing very much. So sadly this means I will not be available to attend most shows. I also look at this time as a way to write 2 or 3 articles a month, start paying my dues again, and re-cutting my chops. Hopefully the day will come when I can get back to 3 or 4 or more shows a month, but I don’t predict that for the near future. But if there is a show I attend, I will be sure to write about my experience.

Will you cover my/my artist’s show?

I would love to. Shoot me an email at localexpressmusic@gmail.com or connect on my socials linked on this site.

One thing that was great about writing was connecting with so many great teams supporting artists, so I would love to get back to working with you. As stated above, time constraints are limited at the moment, but if I can, I will write about it. Hit me up.

What is the short term goal for Local Express Music?

Short term goal is just getting back into the game. Writing a couple articles a month. Building up a catalog of articles to showcase, build up a following. Right now, this site is just a hobby for somewhere I can express my thoughts on music I enjoy or shows coming to the area.

Where did the name Local Express Music come from?

Driving down the highway and seeing signs for the exits. One set of lanes were the local lanes to hit the exits, other lanes were the express lanes to bypass access to the exits. I really enjoyed seeing those words together and felt it could be applied to the music industry. Artists touring the country have numerous miles to travel through the express lanes, before they need to take the local exit to play in your city. Now I’m building off that and taking these artists from the express lanes and bringing their story to your local reading device.
